Credit Card Fraud in Auckland Car Parks

On Tuesday this week my local ASB branch phoned to say that my replacement VISA credit card had arrived.  That was a surprise, because I was not expecting to receive a new credit card.  Had I missed something in the mail?  When I collected the card from the bank I was told that it had been proactively replaced due to a "heightened risk of fraud".  Fraud?  In my line of work, that is a word that gets your attention!

The following day news broke of a problem at Auckland City Council car parks that had resulted in credit card information being captured by unauthorised persons.

What Isn't Your Tool Telling You?

When data is read from a hard disk, it is presented to the computer as a sequence of numbers.  Often these numbers need some form of manipulation or translation before an investigator can comprehend the meaning.  In a recent case, I was presented with a challenging analysis scenario that also highlighted a weakness in current forensic tools.

AccessData To Release FTK Version 3

AccessData has announced that version 3 of their FTK computer forensic software will be released in the near future.  AccessData claim that several key improvements will be delivered in the new release, including a parallel processing capability and live network-based acquisition of computers.  But two questions arise.  Will FTK v3 be plagued by bugs and crashes in the same way FTK v2 was?  And what practical improvement in processing speed will be achieved using the parallel processing capability?
